iOS 16: New feature brings extreme security for iPhone and iPad

Apple has announced a new security feature called Lockdown Mode for iPhone, iPad and MacBook devices. The mod provides an “extreme” level of protection by fending off targeted cyberattacks. The feature is aimed at high-end users like journalists and politicians and will be available this year with the release of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura.

The lock mode, already available in the third beta of the mentioned software versions, is an optional security function for use in an emergency. The device's availability is restricted as soon as it is enabled in the data protection and security areas. Surprisingly, any user running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS or macOS can enable this feature.

What are the benefits of lock mode?

For example, FaceTime calls are only allowed to people who are already connected to the user's device. Other people are automatically blocked from calling or reaching you. The messaging app also restricts the type of attachments, including website links. Also, shared albums and invites will be removed.

Deeper integrations are also covered by the lockdown mode. Disables JavaScript compilation in the browser so that affected websites can only be allowed through manual exclusion. This applies to Safari and third-party web browsers on an Apple device. Wired connections to external devices require the user to enter the password before they can work. Finally, mobile device management is also disabled.

Apple says the company is working to expand its lock mode functionality in the coming years. In fact, starting this year, the company is doubling the rewards of its security rewards program. It encourages experts and researchers to find gaps in the new feature.

  Considerations When Using a 12VHPWR Adapter Working on the main system connectivity features, including PCIe, PCI-SIG has introduced a new standard in 2021 to catch up with the power consumption of high-performance graphics cards: the 12VHPWR connector, also known as PCIe 5.0 connection.
